Everything that reaches Macedonia as information is stuck on the events of several years ago. For example, we know that Italy was one of the most affected countries during the pandemic, that tens of thousands of migrants arrived on the Italian coast, and in 2022 the right wing won power. Can you explain to us what happened during that period, why the people chose that particular option in the parliamentary elections?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Silvia Giagnoni:<\/strong> The reasons are many and hard to pinpoint in a few lines. A major one is rooted in 30+ years of failing politics of leftist parties, especially the center-left ones who came to rule the country at points. The series of labor &amp; social security reforms\u2014the Monti-Fornero (L. 92\/2012) and then Matteo Renzi\u2019s Jobs Act (2015)\u2014led to the progressive disenfranchising of working people. The Political Left, or what remains of it in the centrist PD, has abandoned the working class of the country. The constant demise of voters\u2019 turnout signals such rejection of political involvement, despite pressing contemporary issues. Take climate change and its transformational impact on society and economy (read, the ecological transition) and Italy\u2019s dearth of industrial politics. Espousing neoliberalist policies, in line with the EU, meant rejecting state intervention in the industry. The case of Stellantis, who is delocalizing its plants from Italy, is a case in point of such a process. Way too often, the state\u2019s intervention seems to be conveniently evoked by industrialists only to pay off welfare and cover the failings of shortsighted investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Djejlan Veliu:<\/strong> <strong>What <\/strong><strong>are the conditions<\/strong><strong> of the working class in Italy, is it unionized? Also, what is the attitude of the state, capitalists and Italian workers towards economic migrants?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Silvia Giagnoni:<\/strong> I feel like I answered the first part of the question above. Economic migrants are routinely exploited. They are treated as disposable. There are near modern day slavery conditions in the fields, not just in the South of Italy but in Piedmont and Veneto also (recent case were uncovered this July). It should not surprise as Italy\u2019s salaries have been stagnant for 30 years and working conditions have worsened for all. In this scenario, scapegoating mechanisms, escalated by the media, emerged as a result of worsening working conditions for all. The workforce in Prato (Tuscany), the multicultural city where I live, is drastically racialized, and its industrial areas (Macrolotto 1-2) have been deemed as \u201csacrifice zones.\u201d Foreign, mostly Pakistani workers have been unionized by Si Cobas (now SUDD Cobas) in the area and have been fighting one business at the time for the respect of worker\u2019s rights and better contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Djejlan Veliu:<\/strong> <strong>In 2022, mass protests of high school students took place in Italy, where about 200 thousand demonstrators took part. What prompted those protests,&nbsp; <\/strong><strong>how did the<\/strong><strong>y<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>end? Students<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong> and young people<\/strong><strong> now \u2013 are they<\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong>willing<\/strong><strong> to take revolutionary steps in their struggles<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Silvia Giagnoni: <\/strong>The restrictions enforced during the pandemic prompted the protests. Students demanded the availability of areas to meet and discuss issues, for instance, as they rightly identified the deprivation of shared spaces as a key deprivation of their political agency. The police brutally repressed some of the protests (namely in Turin and Rome), but students kept fighting for their right to assembly. They also were fighting against PCTO programs (former \u201calternanza studio-lavoro\u201d) as they saw them as exploitative and dangerous\u2014for instance, in January 2022 an 18-year-old student, Lorenzo Parelli, died while working a job via a study\/work program. He became the symbol of what is wrong with that program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compared to movements of the past, protests did not see huge numbers, and many students remained inactive. And in your opinion, in which direction should the student and worker struggle move in Italy and in the world in general?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vanessa Torcasso:<\/strong> As you may know, this international mobilisation started in the West Bank by Palestinian students and reached the United States, where in early May there were encampments on university campuses and finally the occupation of a building on the campus of Columbia University in New York. All this was harshly repressed by the police forces with evictions and violent arrests of lecturers and activists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Italy too, young people were the first to take to the streets. After Italy abstained from voting on the UN resolution for the recognition of Palestine as a UN member state, the Palestinian Youth Movement Italy, together with university collectives, organised street demonstrations and encampments in the courtyards of Italian universities, culminating in the commemoration day of the Nakba (the 1948 Palestinian forced exodus) on 15 May. The main Italian universities, such as those of Milan, Brescia, Turin, Padua, Venice, Bologna, Pisa, Florence, Rome, Naples and Palermo, were occupied by &#8216;encampments&#8217; on the Spanish model of protest, later reproduced in the United States: i.e. the occupation with tents of university courtyards to protest against the universities&#8217; choices to have relations and agreements with Israeli universities and war industries such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leonardo.com\/en\/home\">Leonardo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eni.com\/en-IT\/company.html\">Eni<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Committee was born out of a twofold drive: on the one hand, to make our voice heard by the organisation we work for. On the other, to give strength to the students&#8217; voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/glasniidei.mk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/italija-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/glasniidei.mk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/italija-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/glasniidei.mk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/italija-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/glasniidei.mk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/italija-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/glasniidei.mk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/italija-2-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/glasniidei.mk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/italija-2-696x464.jpg 696w, https:\/\/glasniidei.mk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/italija-2-1068x712.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/glasniidei.mk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/italija-2.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As a committee, we attended all student-sponsored events, spoke out through public speeches and communiqu\u00e9s, and accompanied student representatives to the Academic Senate to demand that the motion to suspend the agreements with Israel be accepted. Since the motion was not accepted, we launched a collection of signatures to lobby the next meeting of the Academic Senate. However, to date, we have not obtained what we requested, but we are determined to continue protesting until we do. Our demands are the same as those currently expressed in all the languages of the world: end the bilateral agreements with Israeli universities and arms companies to give a clear and strong signal against the mass extermination taking place in Gaza. Despite the summer, the mobilisation has not stopped and we are working on the creation of a national coordination of academic staff. We are not going to remain indifferent to the appeal of the academic staff of Gaza universities published on 1 June by the Guardian! They asked for our help to stop the &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2024\/04\/un-experts-deeply-concerned-over-scholasticide-gaza\">scholasticide<\/a>&#8216;, namely the systematic annihilation of the Palestinian education system, which is a strategic step in the ongoing genocide in Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new season of struggles uniting workers and students began a few years ago, with the struggle of the <a href=\"https:\/\/jacobin.com\/2023\/04\/italy-gkn-factory-occupation-transform-production-workers-jobs-climate-change\">GKN workers<\/a>. Now, with the mobilisation for Palestine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pBppm2Td1eA\">again workers and students meet<\/a>. The hope is that this union will grow stronger because, as the GKN workers&#8217; struggle taught us, the convergence of struggles is the real way out of this insane and ruthless system, commonly called \u201ccapitalism\u201d. It is certainly not easy for workers forced to survive in a governmental framework that every day takes away labour law protections (just a few days ago the publication of the decree introducing the obligation to notify employers 10 days before a workplace inspection), making our lives more and more at risk and more difficult to carry on. However, it has never been easy.
